What the hell is this?
Manga has become a massive, globalized medium. It is today a significant place that influences our perception of the world, through the stories and representations offered. Some works can serve to enforce existing power relations, other works can challenge those dynamics or even explore new ways to be a society. All of this is political, and since there is not so many resources exploring that aspect of manga, here we are.
Come on it’s just a shonen, who cares about politics?
Political here refers to the act of living and interacting with other humans. Groups interact together with various and complex dynamics, and all cultural production are a result of these interactions. We approach manga tittles with questions in order to analyze and tackle those dynamics:
- who is being shown? (maybe 20 men with various body types and competence, and 1 woman who is simply ‘pretty’)
- who has power? (could it be one boy overcoming all obstacles to rescue his passive girlfriend/love interest/daughter?)
- what kind of elements are recurring? (one manga with a athletic black character is one thing, many manga where a black character is mostly defined by his body is telling something about society)
- how are things shown? (is sexual assault shown to be denounced or to be enjoyed as something exciting?)
Hi!
Hi, welcome here.
